The Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) is a non-governmental, nonprofit organization created in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world's forests
FSC created a set of standards for its members and developed identifiable branding so progressive consumers are assured their purchase conforms to the highest standards that protect against deforestation.

FSC has developed a set of 10 principles for proper forest stewardship:
- Compliance with laws and FSC principles
- Tenure and use rights and responsibilities
- Indigenous people's rights
- Community relations and workers' rights
- Multiple benefits from the forest
- Assessment of environmental impact
- Management planning
- Monitoring and assessment of management impact
- Maintenance of high conservation value forests
- Responsible management of plantations
